(December 17, 1993) Eight years ago in the Pacific North-west of the United States, a five-reactor construction project failed and left in its wake the largest bond default in US history. Only one reactor -WPPSS unit 2- ever operated and two others have been left in a partially constructed state.

(404.4003) WISE Amsterdam - Now the shells of these two reactors are being considered as the beginnings of two breeder reactors whose purpose will supposedly be to rid the world of its unwelcome plutonium surplus. Called the Isaiah Project, this is the leading concept among various proposals for "plutonium burning" reactors. In an energy appropriations bill signed into law a month ago, the Isaiah Project has received its first funding.
